A Mesquita Eyup Sultan foi construída sobre o túmulo de Abu Eyup el-Ensari, que era um amigo próximo do Profeta. Durante o primeiro cerco árabe de Constantinopla, de 674 a 678, adoeceu e morreu fora das muralhas enquanto transportava o estandarte do exército do Profeta. Pediu aos seus amigos que o enterrassem bem dentro de Constantinopla depois de o cerco terminar. Embora não tenham conseguido penetrar profundamente nas muralhas, enterraram-no junto ao Corno de Ouro e honraram o seu pedido. Depois de Mehmet, o Conquistador, tomar Istambul em 1453, pediu ao seu conselheiro espiritual, o Shaykh al-Islam, Akshemsuddin, que encontrasse a localização do local de sepultamento de Eyup el-Ensari. Depois de procurar o túmulo durante uma semana, um dia Akshemsuddin desmaiou e teve um sonho. Ao acordar, afirmou que o túmulo estava no local onde colocaria o tapete para a oração. Encontraram o túmulo após algumas escavações no local que ele indicou. O túmulo tinha inscritas as palavras "Túmulo de Ebu Eyyub" em letras sufis.
