Mezquita Eyup Sultan

Como es la mezquita más antigua y la más importante de Estambul, es una visita obligada si estás planeando un recorrido cultural por Estambul.

La Mezquita Eyup Sultan fue construida sobre la tumba de Abu Eyup el-Ensari, que fue un amigo cercano del Profeta. Durante el primer asedio árabe de Constantinopla entre 674 y 678, enfermó y murió fuera de las murallas mientras portaba el estandarte del ejército del Profeta. Pidió a sus amigos que lo enterraran en lo profundo de Constantinopla una vez terminado el asedio. Aunque no lograron penetrar profundamente en las murallas, sí lo enterraron junto al Cuerno de Oro y honraron su petición. Después de que Mehmet el Conquistador tomara Estambul en 1453, pidió a su consejero espiritual, el Shaykh al-Islam, Akshemsuddin, que encontrara la ubicación del lugar de entierro de Eyup el-Ensari. Tras buscar la tumba durante una semana, un día Akshemsuddin se desmayó y tuvo un sueño. Al despertar, afirmó que la tumba estaba en el lugar donde colocaría la alfombra para la oración. Encontraron la tumba tras excavar un poco en el lugar que indicó. La tumba llevaba escritas las palabras "Tumba de Ebu Eyyub" en letras sufíes.
